Where this sits in PMBOK, and what PMI gives you

Members want two things from this page: to know that working this way is the profession’s direction and not a fad, and to know what PMI already gives them. Both, dated.

The ten jobs on the PMBOK map

The table uses the performance domains of the PMBOK Guide Seventh Edition, which is what the chapter’s exam-preparation material still follows. The Eighth Edition was published in November 2025; the table will be redrawn against it when the chapter’s material moves.

What PMI gives a member, as of the last check

1. Free AI courses

   PMI’s AI learning page lists “Practical Application of Generative AI for Project Managers” as free for everyone, and “PMI Essentials: Seven AI Project Patterns” and “Generative AI Overview for Project Managers” as free eLearning. The overview course carries a badge on passing its knowledge check, a lab with sample prompts for a charter, a critical path and a business case, and a prompting guide. Whether a course earns PDUs, and how many, is printed on its own page: check it there before claiming, then follow how to claim PDUs.

2. PMI’s own assistant, free for members

   PMI Infinity is PMI’s AI assistant, grounded in PMI’s global standards, drawing on PMI’s own content and citing its sources, and members-only since February 2024. It is the answer to “which tool is safe for PMI questions”, and it costs a member nothing extra. PMI questions there; everything else in the assistant your employer allows.

3. The standard and the guides

   “Artificial Intelligence in Portfolio, Program and Project Management”, the “Leading and Managing AI Projects” digital guide and “Leading AI Transformation” are listed as free for members on the same page.

4. A certification, for a different job

   PMI-CPMAI, PMI Certified Professional in Managing AI, is about managing AI projects - business needs, data, model development, operating it responsibly - not about using an assistant. Its exam content outline says no prior project-management, technical or AI experience is required and that a preparation course is; members get a discount on the exam. Nobody should buy a course for the wrong reason: if what you want is this section, you do not need CPMAI.

The chapter’s own line

The annual conference is the chapter’s one PDU activity. The 2025 edition already carried a talk on outcomes in the AI era; expect the theme to return. This section itself earns no PDUs - it is a working guide, kept current by a named person on a named date, which you can see on the hub.
